HISTORY OF PENCILS
Pencils may seem like the most mundane objects that we use today, but the first mass-produced pencils only came about in the late 1600s in Germany. These early pencils were made out of graphite sticks encased in wood, but due to Napoleonic war conditions, Nicolas-Jacques Conte, a French scientist serving in the army, experimented with his own mixture of clay and little graphite he had access to. In 1820, wax was substituted for clay by Henry David Thoreau which led to the invention of the classic No. 2 pencil—the standard in school supplies, but there was no reason pencils had to just be regular pencils. Novelty pencils became all the rage in the 2000s as students sought to have the most unique ones in the hallway.
